THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: IT services and solutions major UST Global will partner Virgin Racing for the 2010 Formula One season, UST Global officials said here.
Company officials said UST Global would be Virgin Racing’s IT services partner in a tie-up that will combine the firepower of a recognized racing team with a global IT brand. Virgin Racing is a new team for the new era of Formula One.
They said UST Global would provide support on advanced technical projects as part of the operational partnership, and that a bespoke race management tool providing race engineers a 360-degree trackside perspective of each grand prix was on the cards. UST Global, they said, would have a prominent presence of the new Virgin Racing VR-01 racecar, as well as the attire and equipment of F1 drivers Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi.
UST Global president Joe Nalkara said his company and Virgin Racing were next generation outfits that threw aside convention, and that the shared principles made it a natural choice for his company to partner with Virgin Racing.
UST Global has over 7,000 employees, with more than half of them located at the company’s facilities in Kerala.

UST PARTNER WITH PATH
UST Global partners with PATH to support global health initiatives
Press release
Contacts: Jaci Robbins, UST Global, 949.600.5597, jaci.robbins@ust-global.com; Gena Morgan, PATH, 206.285.3500, media@path.orgUST Global will provide funding and volunteers for immunization projects to save children’s lives
Aliso Viejo, CA, and Seattle, WA, August 27, 2008—UST GlobalSM (UST), a leading provider of information technology services and solutions for Global 2000 enterprises, announced today that it has made a commitment to provide both funding and volunteers for several immunization projects that will be launched and managed by PATH, an international nonprofit organization that works in more than 70 countries to improve global health. PATH’s mission is to improve the health of people around the world by advancing technologies, strengthening systems, and encouraging healthy behaviors.UST Global believes that enterprises have a responsibility to society and is committed to improving the lives of its associates both in the cities where it operates and the communities where its associates live. Partnering with an organization such as PATH is a very effective way to help improve the health of those who need it most.
“Being involved in something greater than ourselves and helping people less fortunate are two values that bond together the shareholders of UST,” said Sajan Pillai, CEO of UST Global. “In searching to make a greater global impact with our resources, we have decided to partner with PATH as the conduit for our philanthropic initiative. It is a wonderful organization that aligns well with core UST values.”
“We are very pleased to be partnering with UST Global as PATH continues its vital work in India,” said Dr. Christopher J. Elias, PATH’s president and CEO. “The company’s valuable support will help to extend the reach of important vaccines to children and protect them from illness. In addition, UST Global’s corporate philanthropy efforts are a great model for how businesses and nongovernmental organizations like PATH can work together to improve global health.”
For its first projects, UST has selected two upcoming PATH immunization programs aimed at assisting women and children in India, where UST has operations and a significant employee base. UST Global employees have initiated a volunteer fundraising drive that will coincide with a corporate donation to make a positive impact on these programs.
Project will expand routine immunizations for women and children
In the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, more than two million women and children each year now get the protection they need from deadly diseases, thanks to a partnership between the Government of Andhra Pradesh and PATH to increase immunization coverage rates and introduce hepatitis B vaccine. The program has proven so successful that ten other states and the national government are emulating it with plans to deliver lifesaving vaccines to millions more women and children. One of the projects UST plans to support is a three-year, statewide routine immunization project that will potentially take place in Gujarat, a state in west India. Similar to PATH’s work in Andhra Pradesh, this immunization project will be conducted in partnership between PATH and the Government of Gujarat. The project is scheduled to commence in January 2009.
UST Global will provide additional program funding to PATH and the Government of Gujarat to support:
- Community mobilization activities using banners, posters, booklets, and other materials to create awareness about the importance of immunizing children.
- Development of training kits for project staff and volunteers.
UST staff to volunteer with Japanese encephalitis immunization program
In September 2008, the state government of Kerala, India, in collaboration with the Government of India and PATH, will conduct a program to immunize children ages one to five against Japanese encephalitis (JE)—a brain disease that kills thousands of children every year and disables many more. PATH has been a leader in the fight against JE since the early 2000s.UST Global employees will volunteer with the JE program, working closely with community health workers to mobilize and motivate families and communities to participate in the program and bring their children to the vaccination centers.

UST TO GO GREEN
Outsourcers insist on ‘green’ tag Mini Joseph Tejaswi | TNN
Bangalore: Going green’s no more a fad for global corporates. It’s business critical as the ‘green quotient’ is increasingly becoming a decisive factor in making or breaking business deals. Increasingly, global outsourcers are interested only in vendors who talk and walk the green.
The Black Book of Outsourcing’s recent Green Outsourcers’ Report-2007 study — done by Florida-based Brown-Wilson Group — has found that some 21% of around 20,000 corporate respondents interviewed has newly introduced green policies to gain preferred-vendor status. Also, 94% of respondents said they have plans to include green clauses as part of their renegotiating processes.
Brown-Wilson ranked providers based on how well they met key criteria like company’s independent green standards, voluntary adoption of eco-friendly practices, their adherence to UN’s environment standards and their compliance to green measures outlined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), says a recent Business-Week report.
The study ranks Accenture at No. 1, scoring in 8 of 18 criteria. Two Indian firms — UST Global and Intelligroup — were also part of the top 10, at No. 7 and 10 respectively. Other companies included Computer Sciences Corp (CSC), Hewlett-Packard, SAIC, IBM, Unisys, Perot Systems and Oracle.
Accenture globally topped the list for its initiatives in reducing carbon imprints for clients, implementing green tracking measures and setting green performance objectives. While the study found CSC’s environmental stewardship and green benchmarking for outsourcing worth rewarding, HP was rated as an effective communicator of green messages to employees and clients. SAIC scored higher than any other provider in mandating environmental legal compliance, while IBM ranked first in developing green technologies, products, services for reducing waste, conserving energy, and increasing efficiency of resources.
Unisys was recognized for its active involvement in developing green technologies, products and services.
The mid-sized UST Global was ranked second in creating a governance programme that orchestrates environmental goals and needs of clients. It also scored second in encouraging the development of environment-friendly technologies.
Arun Narayanan, joint COO of UST Global, said that just being a responsible corporate citizen is not good enough today. “Each corporate has a very critical role to play in protecting and preserving environment through comprehensive green initiatives,’’ he said.
Perot Systems scored on overseeing environmental health on behalf of clients as well as pushing products and service innovations that help protect the environment. Oracle was ranked high for encouraging the development of environment-friendly technologies. Intelligroup was recognized for having pushed product and service innovations that result in environmental protection.
Says Brown-Wilson, “Green factors are forcing a new stage of expectations on global outsourcing suppliers. Environmental concerns have entered into the formal selection process of outsourcing vendors. The influence of consumer and investor opinions for green corporate accountability and the creation of new government regulations in favour of protecting the environment have pushed green issues onto the boardroom agenda and onto outsourcing vendors’ growing plate of priorities.’’
While many outsourcing vendors, particularly European and US-based vendors, have already established proactive green corporate policies, there is expected to be a flurry of activity among offshore firms from India and China to retain competitive appeal.
The impact on outsourcing vendors is forcing executives to incorporate issues like hardware energy consumption, alternative energies, waste disposal, use of recycled content products and environmentally preferable products and services, use of bio-based products, energy- and water-efficient products, alternate fuel vehicles, products using renewable energy, and alternatives to hazardous or toxic chemicals as well as asset disposal into their sourcing strategies, the study stated.
“The economic development of emerging outsourcing countries is alarming. Earth scientists are concerned about the surge in greenhouse gas emissions in countries like China and India,’’ said Scott Wilson, partner in Brown-Wilson.
“Clearly there’s pressure on suppliers to build equities to be attractive to global buyers,’’ said Anuradha Thampy, a green evangelist.
